Beaver Copper Shield; by Michael Blackstock

The beaver is so important, as it creates wetland ecosystems for so many other species to live.  The beaver is an ecosystem engineer, not a pest, or source of pelts.  The beaver is featured on Gitxsan Nation crest poles, and always has the cross-hatching on the tail.

The piece is done on copper, which was historically highly valued, and showed a Chief's power. The turquoise colour is natural patina.
